Shining Gap Festival

The Shining_Gap | festival of light art is a forum for contemporary light art combined with an exceptional exhibition location. Each day after dark over four days, international and local artists will present works of art dealing in different ways with the festival’s theme of Exploring New Spaces. Alongside classic works of light art, the interdisciplinary open-air exhibition will display video art, (space) installations, projections and paintings.

Born in 1981, the twins began working together on their pictures in university. While at university, the artists also discovered glazing, perfecting the process with each picture until the results achieved were possible only with four hands and two hearts.

"Licht im Bild" - FFFZ Kulturforum Düsseldorf

With fine, complex glaze painting, Irina and Marina Fabrizius create pictures of unfathomable depths, filled with magical light that, in the shape of radiating points, rings and lines, pulls the viewer into its ambience as if in its slipstream. The painters’ imagery feeds on perceptions of nature from their childhood on the Kazakh Steppe, which have transformed into discrete paintings. The work of the two artists has been indivisible for several years; each picture is a joint work, pursuant to their existence as identical twins.

The work of the Fabrizius sisters is rooted in the tradition of the light art of the twentieth century, such as that of the ZERO group of artists of Düsseldorf and the American light artists James Turrel, Robert Irwin, Dan Flavin and Douglas Wheeler with their self-referential works.
